The Shins introductionThe Shins' story begins in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1996. Brought together by a genuine love of pop music –  singer/guitarist James Mercer, drummer Jesse Sandoval, keyboardist Marty Crandall and bassist Dave Hernandez formed The Shins. James Mercer had taught himself to play the guitar as a teenager, while listening to bands like Echo & The Bunnymen and My Bloody Valentine. With time, he developed a more pronounced interest in ‘60s pop and the art of well-crafted songwriting. Mercer’s aesthetic, paired with the like-minded sensibilities of his bandmates, gave rise to this most friendly troupe of disbelieving pop heroes.

New Album to be released on own label

The Shins have announced that their next album release will be on Aural Apothecary (James Mercer's own label). Ian Montone (the Band's manager) said: "That partner could very well remain Sub Pop, who have done a remarkable job with the band and have a great staff of people who really love music, It could be a digital partner with respect to other rights. All of this is being determined. The first goal is to make the record and see where that takes us, and, in addition to the marketing tools we have at our own disposal, team up with a label partner that will assist with additional marketing, radio, and various costs." Pre-Order details will be available on this site soon. Watch this space!!

Chutes Too Narrow (2003)

New Mexico quartet The Shins, deliver their US representation of indie rock to our shores, with new album "Chutes Too Narrow", the follow up to 2001's "Inverted World." A bittersweet offering, full of turbulence and surrealism, it is indie rock experimented with and The Shins add another dimension to a genre thought forgotten. From the cynical "Kissing the Lipless" with it's husky melodic whispers, and contradicting emotional but tuneful screams, to the 60s tinged "So says I," The Shins show more diversity than an assorted biscuit tin at Christmas. With it's the beach boys similar vocals, and glimmer of The Coral's infectious ditties, "So Says I" is a carefree summery tune able to get anyone up dancing, whilst cleverly overcoming the need for cheesy lyrics to accommodate the summery feel. "Saint Simon" is a prime example of the lyrical mournfulness and often cynicism often emanated from the band

Wincing The Night Away (2007)

Wincing the night away, Indie Rock Band "The Shins" third album, was released by Sub Pop Records on 23rd January 2007. It is the band's final album under their current record deal. Recording for the album occurred in James Mercer's basement studio, in Phil Ek's home in Seattle, and in Oregon City with veteran producer Joe Chiccarelli. The title is a play on the name of a Sam Cooke song, "Twistin' the Night Away". It is a reference to band member James Mercer's insomnia. "Sleeping Lessons", the title of the first track, also references insomnia and was considered as a possible album title.

Oh, Inverted World (2001)

They always say, you shouldn't buy an album just for a single song BUT then along come the Shins, their album Oh, Inverted World and, most importantly, the timeless psychedelia of "New Slang." If ever an album was worth owning simply for the sheer pop pleasure of a single song, it's this one on Sub Pop label, which features not only "New Slang" but an alternate RealPlayer and Windows Media video for the song.

Working in "New Slang's" favour is a catchy, Beach Boys-style fade-in worthy of Brian Wilson at the height of his powers. The intro gives way to a wispy, countrified tambourine-and-guitar number with lyrics like:

Newsflash

The Sacramento, California, district attorney's office ruled on Tuesday 8th January 2008 that there was insufficient evidence to pursue domestic-violence charges against The Shins' multi-instrumentalist Marty Crandall or his former girlfriend, Elyse Sewell. The pair were arrested Friday after an alleged altercation at a Sacramento hotel during which Sewell claimed in a now-deleted post on her LiveJournal page that a drunken Crandall bruised her arms and bloodied her knuckles, and that she left bite marks on him as a result of their scuffle.
